The Stage 2 expansion of the Southern Queensland Correctional Precinct near Gatton, which includes the new Lockyer Valley Correctional Centre, is set to open in 2024. This project is a significant investment in Queensland’s criminal justice system and aims to provide modern, fit-for-purpose facilities focused on health and rehabilitation. The new centre will house 1,536 beds, making it the largest correctional facility in Queensland.
The construction has already contributed $547 million to the local economy, with a substantial percentage of trade packages awarded to local suppliers. The facility will employ hundreds of people in various roles, including custodial correctional officers, trade instructors, psychologists, and allied health workers. This recruitment is part of a broader campaign to attract local job seekers and support the regional economy.
